What we’re looking at
Among the most common STDs are chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonads, syphilis, hepatitis C, and HIV. These infections can be easily spread through sexual contact and can cause serious health complications if left untreated.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that can be easily transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Symptoms may not appear right away, and some people may not experience any symptoms at all. However, untreated chlamydia can lead to serious health complications, including infertility and chronic pelvic pain. If you are sexually active, it is important to get tested regularly for chlamydia and other STDs.
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is another bacterial infection that can be transmitted through sexual contact. Symptoms may include painful urination, discharge from the penis or vagina, and painful bowel movements. If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and other serious health problems. The best way to prevent gonorrhea is to use condoms during sexual activity and get tested regularly.
Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is a viral infection that can be transmitted through blood-to-blood contact, often through sharing needles or other drug paraphernalia. Symptoms may include fatigue, abdominal pain, and jaundice. Chronic hepatitis C can lead to liver damage and other serious health complications. If you think you may have been exposed to hepatitis C, it is important to get tested and seek treatment as soon as possible.
HIV
HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system and can lead to AIDS if left untreated. It is transmitted through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. There is currently no cure for HIV, but with early detection and proper medical care, many people with HIV can lead healthy, productive lives. It is important to get tested regularly for HIV and practice safe sex to prevent transmission
Syphilis
Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is typically transmitted through sexual contact. The disease can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her baby during childbirth. Symptoms may include the appearance of a painless sore or chancre at the site of infection, usually on the genitals, anus, or mouth. If left untreated, syphilis can cause serious long-term health problems, including blindness, deafness, and neurological problems. Fortunately, syphilis can be easily treated with antibiotics, especially in the early stage of infection.
Trichomonas
Trichomonas is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite that can affect both men and women. Symptoms may include vaginal discharge, itching or burning during urination, and discomfort during sexual intercourse. However, many people infected with trichomonas may not experience any symptoms. If left untreated, trichomonas can lead to more serious health complications and an increased risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections. The infection can be easily diagnosed with a simple test and can be treated with antibiotics.
